The Pattern Emporium Symphony Skirt

NEW PATTERN ALERT!  The Symphony skirt is the latest release by Pattern Emporium; it is an 8 panelled skirt with options in length (mini, knee length, and maxi) and in the amount of flare (subtle or full circle).

Why I Needed the Pattern Emporium Symphony Skirt

Patterns need to justify their existence in my collection.  If I have something similar or can fairly easily modify a pattern myself, I can’t justify a new pattern.  You may be like me, asking yourself, ‘I already have the Pattern Emporium Heartlight and Starlight skirts for my maxi skirt, and I already have the PE Skater Skirt for a circle skirt, so do I really need another?’,  but the Symphony definitely justifies its spot, and here is why:

  • Firstly, in the mini and knee lengths, it gives a lovely trumpet shape that I think is very flattering, and it flares to FULL CIRCLE! I find that my frame is a bit gangly for circle skirts, but a trumpet circle skirt is a great way to get a luscious, full circle skirt while still having some of the cling I prefer to give me shape.
  • In the maxi length, my Symphony Skirt Hack makes it my very favourite skirt pattern of all time and unlike any other skirt pattern I have ever seen, so definitely justified in my collection!!!!

THE HACK

Rather than sewing the seams of my maxi skirt all the way to the hem, I left all the panels unsewn from the knees down, creating lovely slits which makes the skirt swish around my legs as I walk.  This skirt is Dark Blue double brushed poly from Lush Fabrics.

Why hack the Symphony skirt?

  1. I am a boot and shoe person. Slits in the Symphony means I can feature all my beloved shoes.
  2. Slits in the skirt make it a cooler maxi option for summer
  3. I like the feeling of the fabric swishing around my legs.

Styling the Symphony Skirt

There is nothing quite like versatility to make you wear a clothing item again and again.  With different styling, the Symphony skirt gets a whole new lease of wearability.

Here are some dressier styling options.  I love the one of the left: pairing the skirt with my Pattern Emporium True Romance Bishop Sleeve Top (made from double brushed poly from Lush Fabrics)creates an artsy outfit perfect for any slightly dressier social gathering- going out for dinner, or visiting a gallery or a museum. You could wear this with sandals and a vest for another boho option.

Pairing the Symphony with heels and a blazer creates a more conservative outift, great for parent/teacher interviews or dinner with the in-laws. 😉 With stockings underneath, this also becomes a great winter option.

These outfits are more relaxed and probably how I will wear the skirt most often.  Wearing the Symphony skirt with a singlet, flat suede moccasin boots, and a cowgirl hat makes this perfect for daytimes singing gigs, music festivals, or strolling around weekend markets in the summer.

When I need to pick the kids up from school and want to look funky without trying too hard, adding a tshirt, denim jacket, and converse shoes creates a comfortable and practical outfit which still looks awesome.

So there you have it.  The Symphony maxi skirt hacked.  Does the Pattern Emporium Symphony Skirt deserve a place in your pattern collection?

It’s a definite, resounding YES from me!

  1. I LOVE this hack Blythe! I live in Chicago & have about 15 pairs of boots from cowboy to booties that would be perfect for this skirt & hack from fall in late September to spring in March. It would be fun for summer sandals & flats too! Thank you!!!
